The PAR tradition seeks to involve research subjects in all aspects of the research process to support knowledge development, group empowerment and social change.
When utilizing a PAR approach, OMNI facilitates communities in the process of developing their own research questions and supports information gathering, analysis and interpretation processes. One example of a Participatory Action Research project was the Qualitative Exploration of the Tobacco Control Needs of Colorado Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPIs), conducted in partnership with the Asian Pacific Development Center on behalf of the Colorado State Tobacco Education and Prevention Partnership (STEPP). This research project engaged peer researchers (bilingual AAPIs that represented Colorado's ten largest Asian ethnic groups) in the following research activities:
- Identification and recruitment of key informants
- Instrument development
- Interviews (50% of these interviews were conducted in an Asian language native to the participant)
- Validating data interpretation
- Development of policy and program recommendations
OMNI has developed a number of resources to support projects employing PAR approaches, including the following:
- PAR Summary Articles [two installments of OI newsletters]
