Kim Anh Tran (she/her) | Research Fellow | ktran@omni.org

Kim graduated from the University of Washington School of Public Health with a B.A. in Public Health with a concentration in health education and promotion. She conducted research by analyzing information provided to non-native English speakers pertaining to heat and air-quality events and concluded that non-native ethnic news media had insufficient risk communication available during extreme weather events. Kim’s interest in research began as a junior in high school when she joined the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center to work in a prostate cancer lab that exposed her to various lab skills. Her passion for research continued to grow as she began participating in more opportunities like analyzing how police brutality affects the epidemiology of neurological disorders using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) mapping, why the mental health of Vietnamese refugees in London, England should be addressed using qualitative data, and what antibiotic resistance (Rifampicin and Streptomycin) looks like in E. coli cells. Prior to joining OMNI as a Research Fellow, Kim served as Executive Director at a nonprofit college mentorship organization called Hey Mentor which supports over 100 students at 55 schools.

As an aspiring public health advocate, Kim hopes to lead organizational reform for disadvantaged populations. Growing up as a first-generation student from an immigrant family, Kim witnessed the barriers that restricted healthcare access for her family and developed a passion for solving these inequities in public health. Kim aspires to promote health equity amongst populations who struggle to navigate the American healthcare system due to limitations in communication. Because of her personal upbringing and subsequent research, Kim’s goal is to create avenues in which public health research can be translated into effective policies, programs, and initiatives that are accessible and will improve health at the individual and population levels.

In her free time, Kim enjoys playing tennis, writing therapeutically, going on walks in new neighborhoods, and telling bad jokes to her friends!

As a public health advocate who aims to promote health, racial, and educational equity, I seek to acquire leadership skills through my contributions to evidence-based research and my demonstrated service in the field.

How do you take your coffee or tea?
Sweet coffee and tea with milk. So in both cases, matcha lattes, chai lattes, London fogs, brown sugar lattes, etc.

What is your special talent?
I can be pretty flexible. I can do the King Cobra Pose, I can touch my feet to the back of my head standing up, and if I train, maybe I could be a contortionist.

What do you collect?
I like collecting name badges when I go to conferences, conventions, or events. Bonus if they come with a lanyard.
