Project Description

Omni served as the training and technical assistance partner for AidKit, the software platform that powers some of the largest direct cash aid programs across the United States. This collaboration began in 2020, when Omni supported the launch and rapid scaling of the Left Behind Workers Fund, a pandemic relief initiative that ultimately distributed $38 million in direct cash assistance to workers without U.S. documentation. These individuals were largely excluded from federal COVID-19 relief programs, making this fund an essential intervention.

In this role, Omni supported a person-centered aid application process, offering guidance grounded in equity, accessibility, and trauma-informed practice. This included advising on inclusive and respectful data collection—such as using language that reflects applicants’ lived experiences, and limiting data to what was strictly necessary. Omni also ensured accessible disclosures and confidentiality protections, and helped shape a process rooted in trust by collaborating with community-based organizations. Once the system was in place, Omni trained over 150 staff from more than 40 nonprofit organizations (called “Screeners”), and provided daily technical assistance to support their work. This included help with eligibility interpretation, troubleshooting, and real-time issue resolution—ensuring that aid was delivered quickly and equitably. All training and technical assistance were offered in both English and Spanish.

In 2021, the partnership expanded to include the Denver Basic Income Project, which provided $12,000 per year to people experiencing homelessness in Denver. For this initiative, Omni developed and delivered a seven-part training series for 175 Screeners from 23 nonprofit organizations, and continued to provide ongoing technical assistance. To date, this has supported over 1,500 applications for the program.

Through this work, Omni has supported a replicable model of equitable aid delivery—anchored in accessibility, cultural responsiveness, and real-time problem solving. This partnership highlights the value of building trusted relationships, delivering hands-on support, and staying close to community-based implementers every step of the way.

Our focus was on equipping Screeners with practical tools, clear guidance, and day-to-day support—so they could confidently navigate a complex process and connect people with aid as quickly and compassionately as possible.
