Omni conducted a statewide qualitative study—funded by the Telligen Community Initiative and produced in partnership with the Colorado Hospital Association—to better understand the birthing experiences of people of color in Colorado. Through in-depth interviews with 24 individuals who gave birth between 2016 and 2021, the study explores what contributes to or detracts from safe, respectful, and empowering maternity care. Participants shared a wide spectrum of experiences that highlighted both deeply meaningful provider relationships and persistent gaps in care marked by miscommunication, assumptions, or lack of follow-through.

Key themes that emerged include the value of respectful communication, the importance of culturally responsive care, challenges navigating postpartum recovery, and the supportive role of doulas, midwives, and peer networks. Many participants offered clear, experience-based suggestions for how care could be improved—emphasizing things like consistent follow-up, being listened to, and feeling involved in decisions.

Omni’s findings offer healthcare providers, systems, and community leaders a grounded, human-centered perspective on where maternity care is working (and where it falls short) for people of color in Colorado. By centering the voices of those directly impacted, the report delivers actionable insights for strengthening trust, improving care quality, and ensuring that every birthing person feels seen, heard, and supported.
