Project Objectives

  • Evaluate community readiness across Virginia through coordination of a standardized assessment with all participating Community Services Boards (CSBs).
  • Document the gambling and gaming environment statewide through media scans, legal landscape analysis, and qualitative data collection with key stakeholders.
  • Equip CSBs with tools and technical assistance to enhance local capacity for problem gambling prevention using data-informed insights.

Project Description

As gambling and sports betting rapidly expand across the U.S. (now legal in over 30 states) so too does the urgency to address rising problem gambling behaviors. Recognizing this need, the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (DBHDS) began investing gambling-related tax revenue into community prevention in 2021.

Omni partnered with DBHDS to equip CSBs across Virginia with the tools and technical support to better understand local gambling and gaming environments. Omni coordinated a statewide community readiness assessment to better understand Virginian’s preparedness to engage in problem gambling prevention. Additionally, Omni supported an environmental scan process to assess the landscape of gaming and gambling across the commonwealth.

The project included active and passive media scans, a review of the legal landscape in Virginia, and qualitative data collection with community members and prevention service providers.
